The conversation that works better before the adoption than after.

If you have not decided yet, this is the list to settle before anyone says yes — who feeds, who walks, where he sleeps, and what the least-ready person needs.

By the time a family is filling in a form they have usually decided. What they haven't done is work out who in the house is actually going to do this — which is the thing that determines whether the placement holds.

This is that conversation on paper. Four minutes at a counter, or sent ahead of a home visit.

  • the real cost of week one
  • who owns which job, with names
  • the house before he arrives
  • the first forty-eight hours
  • the day you have nothing left
