Calm children build a calmer dog.

The children’s jobs with the dog, written so a child can do them and a parent can check them.

Most dog-and-child advice is a list of prohibitions handed to a seven-year-old. It doesn't hold, because it asks a child to assess an animal.

This works the other way. The adult holds the risk. The child holds a routine — a real one, with real responsibility inside real limits — and the dog gets a house that behaves the same way every day.

  • what an adult owns
  • children carry routine within limits
  • one dog, one voice
  • reading the dog — green, yellow, red
  • what children can do and must never do
  • the truth rule
  • when it slips, freedom comes down

I wrote this for my family. Then I shared it with the people I thought might get something from it. Use it, ignore it, or write back and tell me how to make it better. Up to you.
